But Netflix's latest offer could change that, potentially putting pressure on Sling TV. "We have heard that our Sling TV subscribers are among the most passionate movie lovers in the world, and we look forward to helping them enjoy their favorite flicks even more," said Roku's senior vice president of content acquisition, Paul Szegedy-Corcoran, in a statement. Sling TV's basic package of $20 per month will become available in early April. The company is already offering one-week rentals at the same price. "I think this is going to further increase the pressure on our streaming competitors to deliver premium entertainment at a lower price point," said John Morrey, CEO of the digital entertainment company Nerdvana. The timing of the change is also significant: It comes as more viewers are abandoning traditional pay TV packages and replacing them with streaming video services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. Netflix had the edge over its rivals for a long time, but now it's become an all-you-can-eat buffet. In December, Netflix added 13.5 million streaming subscribers, compared with 9.1 million for the Sling TV and Hulu, according to data from research firm eMarketer. And Sling TV, which mainly provides live and on-demand TV and sports programming, has added more than 1.5 million streaming subscribers since it launched last year.
